A guide to ordering at this popular, but confusing, NJ cafe

It’s really no secret at this point that Rook Coffee has probably the best coffee in all of New Jersey. I’ve had some great iced coffees here when I go to the Jersey Shore in the summer. Since the weather is improving and I know I will be going back to a Rook Coffee soon, I have to admit that I get very stressed when I have to order for myself.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can’t seem to find the right way to order myself a drink there. They don’t really have a simple menu so I always rely on the baristas to help me out and have to say to date they have never disappointed me.

Considering I’ve been to this place about 10 times now, you’d think I’d figure out how to order coffee for myself there, but unfortunately I have no idea.

Rook has an app that makes ordering a bit easier, but I never get to know what add-ins and syrups they regularly carry because they only have their specialty drinks displayed on their menu.

It’s nice to know that I can order a s’mores latte, but what shots and flavor syrups go into a s’mores latte? Sometimes I just want a caramel coffee, but I never know if they have caramel to add. I brought my friends as reinforcements when ordering when I went to the Rook location in Freehold, NJ.

I asked the workers to give me insight on how to order correctly and here is the step by step list on how to do it. I’m just saying summer 2022 will be a Rook Coffee summer and we’ll all be showing up to get our iced coffees before roasting on the Jersey Shore, and be sure we know how to order there.

Their menu looks a bit like this;

I approached the counter and when the barista asked me what I wanted, I said, “I’m seriously confused and I have no idea.”

He explained to me that when ordering, there are actually no flavoring supplements that you can add to your drink. For example, there is a s’mores cafe available right now. Although it says s’mores, there are no sugary syrups and chocolate drizzle like Starbucks or Dunkin’ would have.

All of their coffees are infused with the flavors of the roast, so the roast s’mores had a graham cracker flavor infused into the coffee. Rook likes to sell his brand of coffee a lot, so from what I understand it’s a cafe that’s more about trying different roasts than making frappuccinos and sweet cream cold foam lattes.

You can try any infusion they currently carry mixed with your choice of milk and sugar. It’s pretty simple once you figure that out.

They aim to keep it simple, and before I asked the questions today, it was almost so simple it was confusing. So if you want to try different coffee roasts and taste the subtle flavors, this shop is a must.
