A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly slashing a 21-year-old man at a cafe near Lorong 18 Geylang, police said Thursday (June 2).

The victim suffered cuts to his neck and head and was conscious when taken to hospital.

Police said they were alerted to the incident around 4.40pm on Wednesday.

When they arrived, the attacker had already fled, leaving the victim at the cafe.

Through follow-up investigations and with the help of surveillance camera footage, the police were able to establish the identity of the attacker. They tracked him down to an apartment at 5 Hougang Avenue, where he was arrested within three hours of the incident.

Investigations are ongoing and the attacker is expected to be charged in court Friday with willfully causing damage with a dangerous weapon.

According to eyewitnesses interviewed by Shin Min Daily News, the victim was sitting in the corner of the cafe having coffee and talking to his friends when the attack happened.

The assailant allegedly entered the cafe through an alley, discreetly approached the victim and slashed him several times before fleeing.

If found guilty, the man can be jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned or both.

Police said: “Police will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence and blatant disregard for the law. We will spare no effort to apprehend these offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.
