Coffee Cat hosted Pop Up Bookshop with a focus on providing children’s literature that reflects diversity.

By Sami Grace Donnelly

Located in downtown Auburn, Coffee Cat is a quiet environment with boho and shabby-chic flavors. It’s perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll and a latte.

Before you even access the menu, climbing the stairs and entering the front door gives you the opportunity to discover a variety of local events and products. Coffee Cat has posters and graphics for groups, fundraisers or other things happening here in the Auburn-Opelika area. All the goodies on sale will have you wondering how you got this far in life without them.

Coffee Cat is perfect for you as it offers a simple but delicious menu of coffees and sweets. My favorite is their sweetest drink, an ice cold “Harry Styles Latte”. It is never intrusive and always hits the spot. Whether you need breakfast or an afternoon snack, Coffee Cat has you covered. Specialty drinks and freshly baked goods can never hurt you, especially when they come from this paradise.

The outdoor seating is lovely when the weather is nice, but the indoor seating never disappoints. Your mid-morning outing will be backed by a cushioned seat and smooth indie music – these baristas really know what they’re doing with coffee making and a banger playlist. The exposed brickwork and large front windows really make you feel like the main character in their favorite local coffee spot.

Coffee Cat passes the mood test. It’s the perfect place to unwind, be productive, or come for a relaxing afternoon. Between friends or alone, there is no wrong answer except to go through it!

320 West Magnolia Ross House

By Mallorie McCoy

Ross House Coffee (location 320) exudes a modern vibe with its white tile floors and green accents. This is definitely the most convenient off-campus café as it is located right across from the engineering school. The Ross House offers a variety of hot and iced coffees and teas, as well as cookies and pastries for breakfast. After speaking with regular customers, it was said that their favorite order was a hot vanilla chai latte.

When you have a slower day this is the place for you. It’s a friendly cafe for all ages, but normally caters to the average student. The comfy green velvet sofas are probably the most coveted seats in the store. Many people come to Ross House to catch up with a friend, but in the morning it’s the perfect quiet place to study. Although the cafe space is a bit compact for some, it exudes a cozy atmosphere. Overall, Ross House is a laid back atmosphere. There are many unique spaces where you can enjoy your coffee and just work. Plus, tables are set up outside if you like to sip your coffee in the sun. The cafe has many windows adding plenty of natural light to an already warm and welcoming environment. Ross House might be the best way to start your day when you’re not in a rush and looking for an attractive workspace.

Well Red wins Best Coffee for Plainsman’s Choice.

well red

By Mallorie McCoy

Well Red is a popular cafe in Auburn. It is so popular that it is often difficult to find an available parking space. However, the house has plenty of seating with indoor space as well as a back and front porch. If you prefer an array of choices, Well Red is the place for you as they serve hot and iced coffees, kombucha, wine, beer, and delicious desserts and pastries. Although they can supply all your coffee needs, Well Red really is considered an independent bookstore as the walls are lined with shelves of books.

Each of the shelves is organized by category, making it easy to find. The atmosphere is comforting and warm. Although many go there for work, I feel like a lot of people are going to converse with others over their favorite drink. Well Red regularly organizes events such as book clubs, author visits and book signings. Plus they have the latest hours of any local cafe. It’s the ideal place to squeeze in a test or drink a bottle of wine with friends. Plus, retro-chic sofas and loveseats make the intimate home even more inviting. Once you walk in, you’re sure to want to sit down and stay a while. On a lovely fall day or warm summer night, either porch is a nice place to relax and read or catch up with a friend. I think Well Red is definitely best suited for extroverts, but in a great way. Being louder than some indoor cafes, the outdoors is a better workspace. It’s a place that exudes a vibrant, joyful energy and it’s a place I’ve never felt out of place. Plus, the coffee is always consistent and tastes the same great every time. Well Red is a place I always look forward to returning to. If you like a lively atmosphere, options and good coffee, Well Red is the complete package.

Parks, restaurants and cafes — like The Bean, pictured here — are all options for hangouts around Auburn.

The bean

By Sami Grace Donnelly

With its wall of windows and playful geometric accent wall, the bean definitely speaks your language. You value nonconformity, utility and aesthetics. It’s no surprise that you match this colorful explosion from the past.

Stepping through the door is like stepping into the best time machine in the world. It feels like an authentic 70s restaurant, timeless and perfect for studying, sharing a meal with someone or playing board games on the sofa with friends.

The Bean offers an extensive menu of coffees, teas, smoothies, breakfast foods, sandwiches and desserts – with gluten-free options available. This place has a heart for both coffee drinkers and non-caffeinated beverage lovers. “The Wonder” is a specialty mocha that is likely made with magic. The establishment offers the “best auburn cinnamon rolls,” and the spiced avocado toast and waffles are two crowd favorites.

Whether you fancy a productive afternoon away from campus or a delicious breakfast before the day, The Bean is your place. It will never fail to complement your sunny, retro and carefree personality.

Mama Mocha’s location in Auburn is now under new ownership and rebranded as Coffee Mafia.

coffee mafia

By Sami Grace Donnelly

Not far from campus, Coffee Mafia offers its customers a pleasant welcoming atmosphere. The mishmash of furniture and decor can only cause a sweet smile. Whether you are there to read, keep a journal or meet a friend, you will find an atmosphere of general placidity and friendship.

In terms of commerce, the shop includes a corner of local art – prints, jewelry and trinkets – for sale. Customers can shop or explore while waiting for their drink. And the drinks they have. They even have a punch card system to earn a free drink after ten visits – which isn’t hard to pull off once you get hooked.

This place has a heart for mocha lovers, but the menu is extensive. It is endless and infinitely delicious. Trying – and loving – something new on every visit is easily conceivable. The employees are happy to offer suggestions based on your preferences and seem to genuinely care about their work and their customers. They have plenty of coffee-free drinks, food, and even gluten-free options.

Coffee Mafia is a place for all states of mind. Whether you need a change of scenery or a place to distract yourself from the cares of the day, an authentic local mocha will never let you down.

Johan Jo, owner, manager and head barista of Ristrettos Lounge, aims to create a space that bridges the communities of Opelika and Auburn.

By Destini Ambus and Sami Grace Donnelly

The Ristretto Lounge is a short drive from campus. His customers are loyal, that’s for sure. As you step through the door, your eyes drift up to the vaulted ceilings and comforting windows. Light wood and greenery make the atmosphere open, relieving all the stress of work or school.

If you’re dating Ristretto, you probably enjoy focus time and may be quite introverted. That is, you enjoy being around people, but you also enjoy being alone. You surround yourself with people who appreciate your introverted nature but will push you out of your comfort zone. With your minimalist eye for style, it’s no wonder you fit into the sweet quietude of Ristretto.

They also have a BYOM (bring your own cup) function to avoid waste. The baristas are always ready and willing to serve. The latte art is exquisite. Every detail is thought through – you won’t want to miss out.

By Sami Grace Donnelly

Walking into this open-plan cafe will almost always make you smile. It’s light, airy, chic and, well, unique.

You are a bit of a minimalist, you want to make the most of your space and enjoy a more natural and comfortable way of life. You are down to earth and like to make people feel comfortable in your space as best you can. You like to put in the work and all the advantages that entails.

You also appreciate today’s trends and sense of modernism. It’s always a good thing to have an open mind. The unknowns of each new day must be managed with a delicate balance between curiosity and agenda. You enjoy watching and supporting local artists, and you’re probably the friend who schedules everything into a calendar.

Whether you’ve blocked out Sunday afternoons to study or just want to hang out with a friend, UNIQ will leave you satisfied and recharged with its tasty and reliable menu of coffees, non-coffees and pastries.
